![]() ![]() But the story’s not over yet, so that’s only to be expected. So should you read it? Yeah, even if you won’t feel totally satisfied by the end of it. But it’s also fun, engrossing, and has a signature edginess to it that’s great for teen readers, too. Yes, it can be hand-wringing inducing at times. But, even with all that, Flashback is still entertaining. And Fitz becomes a total jerk by the end of the book. Have fun waiting.) We also don’t see a lot of the side characters we’ve come to care about much, either. (By the way, you won’t get a true ending to the triangle until Stellarlune. (Is anybody really in doubt about who she’s going to choose? Because I’d bet quite a lot of money that it’s Keefe.) It gets tiring to read about pages upon pages of Keefe, Sophie, and Fitz navigating their complicated feelings, and by the end of it you have a big fat nothing. Matt Berman, writing on the Common Sense Media Web site, mused that I Am the Messenger displays glimpses of brilliance. Because all those pages with Sophie and her duo add up to Sophie still not knowing who she really likes. And then the love triangle, let me just say, you will be So. But a thirteen year old could most likely handle it. Plus we also get Sophie’s agonized POV as this all happens to her and her friends, which adds an intriguing level of intensity to it all. The crunching and shattering of bones, the shredding of muscle and nerve, the slicing and stabbing of said shattered bones and shredded muscle, it’s all pretty gory. ![]() My thirteen year old self felt a little queasy reading it, and I have a super tough stomach when it comes to violence in books or movies. The fight that lands Sophie and Fitz in the Healing Center is pretty graphic, too. The writing is totally engrossing, Shannon Messenger has crafted a great style that sweeps you away and leaves you feeling like an emotional wreck after the book is over, so the hundreds of pages in the Healing Center were actually pretty interesting even though not much really happened. Those strangers are the ones that are hurting children, grooming them, and causing them to do things they would never. ![]() Even Common Sense Media says: Kik is a Social networker that connects with strangers, bots, websites. Some stuff is really great, (Sophie and Keefe’s spirited, feisty banter and magnetic chemistry, anything with Ro, and the fact that Dex has finally gotten over Sophie) and other stuff is just meh. There is no way that this app is safe for teens, yet this app is still rated as a 3 star 17+ app. For one thing, we get basically no answers about anything besides Silveny’s pregnancy and the fact that Fitz likes Sophie (ugh, Fitzphie is SO gross), so if you’re wondering if you can skip a book, this would be the book to skip, though I definitely don’t recommend doing that. If your going to read this series just be ready to commit, I just can't wait until it's over.Flashback starts with a bang and ends with a BOOM, but the in-between can be super slow. And the final thing I want to say is that there are WAY too many characters, there's about 10 MAINISH characters (and that's just kid main characters) and half the time I have to ask myself: Wait? Who is that again? It just gets way too confusing. Since then we have read all the books in the series multiple times, listened to the series on Audible, and gone to see Shannon Messenger in person and had her. And everyone else gets MAD AT HER WHEN THE NEVERSEEN HAVE KILLED OR TRIED TO KILL THEIR OWN FRIENDS!!!! I mean I've completely forgotten everything that's happened in books 2-6 because NOTHING HAPPENED!!!! The only good or really interesting book in the series is book 1. It was fun and new and about ELVES!!! But as the series went on (about around book 4 or 5) I started to ask, will there ever be any answers to ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!! The heroes have WAY TOO MANY PLOT LINES!!! It drives me crazy, I mean I know they're kids but come one they have adults helping them and A BUNCH OF BODYGUARDS!!!! Over the series the heroes keep trying to beat the Neverseen (the bad guys) but they do not and the heroes just end up with a HUGE pile of riddles and mysteries and questions that ARE NEVER ANSWERED TO THIS DAY!!! And NOW there is an 8.5 BOOK! I read it and *spoiler* Sophie finally finds out where a hiding spot of the Neverseen is (no one is there though) and burns it down, finally doing something. Okay, I really liked the KoLCs book series when I first started it. ![]()
